Foreigners in Ecuador

We assist foreign nationals with immigration and legal matters in Ecuador, in Spanish and in English, from the first assessment through to the steps a case requires.

Situations we handle

Legal matters that arise while living in Ecuador

Arriving, settling or staying in a country involves procedures and obligations that are not always evident from the outside. These are the matters foreign nationals most frequently bring to us.

Visas

We review which visa categories may be available to you depending on your migratory situation and current Ecuadorian law, and explain the documentation and steps each route involves.

Residency

Temporary and permanent residency applications, renewals and changes of category, assessed case by case against the conditions in force at the time of the application.

Migratory regularization

We analyse irregular stays, expired permits and pending immigration proceedings in order to identify what options remain open, depending on your migratory situation and current Ecuadorian law.

Apostille and document legalization

Guidance on apostille, legalization, sworn translation and the recognition of foreign documents in Ecuador, as well as on Ecuadorian documents intended for use abroad.

Civil and family matters

Marriage, divorce, recognition of parentage, child support, Civil Registry entries and other family or civil matters involving a foreign national or a foreign document.

Property

Purchases and sales, deeds, title review, leases and registry or municipal procedures relating to property located in Ecuador.

Labour and employment

Employment contracts, working conditions, terminations, settlements and labour claims, whether you work for an Ecuadorian employer or employ staff in the country.

Traffic matters

Traffic proceedings, infringements and related administrative or judicial steps, including matters where a foreign driving licence or an insurer is involved.

Criminal defence

Technical defence in criminal matters, including flagrante delicto proceedings, with attention to deadlines, due process guarantees and consular communication where it applies.

How we work

From the first enquiry to the filing

Immigration matters depend heavily on individual circumstances. We work through them in stages so that you understand what is being assessed before any application is prepared. Consultations can be held in Spanish or in English.

1

Initial contact

You write to us with a general description of your situation and your nationality, without sending confidential documents at this stage. We confirm whether the matter falls within our areas of work.

2

Assessment of your situation

We examine your migratory status, your permits and dates, and any proceeding already open, in order to identify which routes may be available under the law in force.

3

Documents and preparation

We indicate which documents may be required, which of them need apostille, legalization or translation, and how to obtain them from your country of origin.

4

Filing and follow-up

We handle the filing and the steps before the competent authority, and keep you informed of developments and of any requirement issued during the process.

Immigration categories, requirements and conditions are set by Ecuadorian law and may change. Nothing on this page should be read as confirmation that a particular visa, residency or regularization route is available to you. Eligibility is assessed case by case, depending on your migratory situation and current Ecuadorian law.

Frequent questions

What foreign nationals usually ask us

Can you tell me which visa I qualify for?

We can explain which categories exist and which of them may be relevant to your circumstances, depending on your migratory situation and current Ecuadorian law. Eligibility is never something we confirm in advance: it is assessed from your documents, your dates and the requirements in force when the application is filed.

Do you work in English?

Yes. We can hold consultations and correspond with you in Spanish or in English. Filings and official documents are prepared in Spanish, as Ecuadorian procedure requires, and we explain their content to you in the language you prefer.

My permit has expired. Is there anything that can be done?

There may be, and there may not. Options after an expired permit or an irregular stay depend on how long the situation has lasted, on any proceeding already opened and on the rules in force. We review the specific facts before telling you what remains possible, and we do not anticipate the outcome of an application.

Do documents from my country need apostille?

Foreign documents generally have to be apostilled or legalized before they can be used in Ecuador, and in many cases translated as well. Which route applies depends on the issuing country and on the authority receiving the document, so we confirm it for each document rather than in general terms.

Can you assist if I am detained or facing a criminal proceeding?

Yes, within our areas of work. Criminal and flagrante delicto proceedings move on short deadlines, so early contact matters. We begin with the case file and the procedural status, and we explain the alternatives available according to the facts and the evidence, without predicting a result.

How long does a procedure take?

Timeframes depend on the authority involved, on the completeness of the file and on circumstances outside the control of any law firm, so we do not quote them in advance. What we can do is explain the stages, what each one requires from you and what may cause a file to be delayed or returned.
